Afsluitdijk

Afsluitdijk

BOIL LOAD AND SAND

The Afsluitdijk is the heavy sea dike between North Holland and Friesland that separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. It is built in two parts. In 1920 the 2.5 kilometer long dike between the mainland of North Holland and the then island of Wieringen was started. Construction of the 30 km long section between Wieringen and Friesland started in 1927. The dike is mainly made up of boulder clay and sand. The last section was closed in 1932.

A WORLD FAMOUS DIKE

The Afsluitdijk, which connects North Holland with Friesland, is a world famous dike. Until the 33 km long Saemangeum dike was built in Seoul in 2010, this was the largest dike in the world. On May 28, 1932, steam whistles and sirens screamed and the flag was raised; the Zuiderzee was no more. The dike was closed and the IJsselmeer was born.

THE MONUMENT

On the Afsluitdijk is the monument that commemorates the closure of the Zuiderzee. Opposite the monument are information columns with information in various languages that give a picture of the Zuiderzee Works. There is also a bronze statue of a stone setter. The statue was unveiled by Queen Beatrix on 28 May 1982, exactly 50 years after the dike was closed.

VIEW OVER SEA AND LAKE

In addition to the historical significance and the impressive size of this project, it is of course also simply beautiful to see, and it is even more beautiful to experience the view you have of the sea and the IJsselmeer when you are standing on the Afsluitdijk. The Afsluitdijk is only 10 kilometers away from Bed and Breakfast Oosterpark Harlingen. A visit is definitely worth it.
